What Happens When Your Battery Gets Low?
It's a common worry for new vanlifers: What if I run out of power? The good news is that modern systems are designed with safeguards, and there are plenty of ways to recharge.
Built-In Protections
Modern lithium batteries include a Battery Management System (BMS) that:
- Automatically shuts off power when voltage drops too low
- Prevents damage from over-discharge
- Protects individual cells from imbalance
- Monitors temperature to prevent issues
This means your battery won't be damaged even if it runs low — the system simply turns off non-essential loads.
How to Recharge on the Road
1. Drive your van Your alternator charges the leisure battery while driving. An alternator battery charger (included in our custom builds) can deliver 20–40A, which means:
- 1 hour of driving ≈ 240–480 Wh of charge
- A full charge from driving: 4–8 hours
2. Solar panels If you have solar installed, simply park in a sunny spot and wait. A 200W panel can replenish 600–1,200 Wh on a good day.
3. Shore power at a campsite Plug into a campsite hookup and charge at full speed. Most systems charge fully in 4–6 hours from mains power.

How to Avoid Running Low
- Monitor your battery — check the state of charge regularly
- Know your consumption — track which devices use the most power
- Plan your route — include driving days to recharge
- Use solar strategically — park in sun, not shade
- Have a backup plan — know where the nearest campsite with hookup is
Worst-Case Scenario
Even if your leisure battery is completely flat:
- Your vehicle's starter battery is separate — you can always drive
- Your gas systems still work — cooking and heating are unaffected
- You can drive to the nearest campsite and plug in
The Reality
Running completely out of power is rare if you're paying attention. Most vanlifers develop an intuitive sense for their power levels within the first week. It becomes second nature — like checking your phone battery.
